Rebecca Gimenez Husted, BS, PhD, is the primary instructor and president of Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue.   Her first book, Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue, was published in 2008.  She is an internationally sought instructor in technical rescue techniques, procedures and methodologies, and she has published numerous critiques, articles and journal submissions on horse safety , technical animal rescue and horse handling issues.   She has done SO MUCH more and continues to educate herself and others.

Schedule for both days

Check in 7:45-8:00

8am -12:30   Classroom setting - Power point instruction       Breaks as needed.

Lunch 12:30 to 1:00   Will be provided on site but if you have special dietary needs please bring your own

1:00 - 4:00   Outdoor setting - hands on instruction and demonstrations.    Breaks as needed

Certificates will be given out at the end of the event.

Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue Concepts will be woven into the course.

  • Implementing Proper Emergency Field Humane Euthanasia for Large Animals of all kinds (horses, cattle, deer, etc.)

  • Prevention & Mitigation of Fire Scenarios (shelters, barns, trailer fires, etc.) and responses to Disaster Wildfire situations

  • Recumbent Animals – Recommendations and Manipulation Strategies

  • Sheltering Set up for Large Animals in Disasters and in Emergency Situations (Hoarding, Disasters, etc.) What are your concerns and involvement

CASE EXAMPLES – NUMEROUS

POSSIBLE DEMONSTRATIONS AND HANDS ON – This depends on availability of live animals, equipment, etc. 

​

BASIC BODY PARTS and SENSES and REACTIONS OF HORSES, LLAMAS, CATTLE – broken out in groups and rotate so that you will know basic body parts useful in cruelty investigations and normal behaviors

​

Horse / Cattle Trailers for demonstrations of safety for people positioning and (optional) practicing loading live animals individually and in groups

​

Local Fire Dept Engine or Rescue apparatus for demonstrations

​

A few Live Animals (horses/cattle/alpacas/llamas) for catching, leading and handling demonstrations and for the basic manipulations - Behavior, Approach, Catching, Containment, Basic Handling, Restraint and Leading Live Animals, Loading Safety for Horses and Livestock, etc.

​

Emergency halters, Basic Manipulations for large animal rescue

​

Field Euthanasia – examples could be looking at my skull collection, shooting a dead head, or shooting a simulated head. 

​

Variety of Animals for Body Condition Scoring practice and demonstrations- multiple species – we will try to have them of various sizes and BCS

​

Using panels for setting up simulated sheltering and containment for large animals

​

and whatever else we can throw in!!!!​​​​​​​
